Tye Rock, Porthleven
This majestic, private home sits atop the cliffs on the Loe Bar side of this popular fishing village. Commissioned in 1883 by John Peverel Rodgers of Penrose, the property was originally known as Rockville. Its unique history included being requisitioned by the American Army and the 29th Infantry Division 1st Platoon prior to the Normandy Landings, before becoming the Tye Rock Hotel in the early 1900s.
We were instructed by the client to complete a full renovation of this historic property which was done over an 18-month period. During this time we were able to observe the dramatically changing outdoor environment throughout the seasons which helped to inspire the interiors. It was important that they functioned as well during the hot, blue-sky days of the summer months as they did during stormy, wind-swept winter nights.
The brief was for the home to be timeless yet flooded with colour; sympathetic to its illustrious history while functioning as a family home, full of personality. Due to the architectural nature of the building, we were able to be bold and adopt darker, earth tones in some of the rooms. A highlight was creating the bespoke bar area, combining rich colours with luxurious upholstery. Where possible original features were kept including fireplaces, flooring and dado rails. Where this wasn’t possible, we were careful to match additions to the period of the property. These were juxtaposed with modern commissions, notably a resin table and a Jethro Jackson hung above the fireplace.
