Pelagos, St Ives

The location of this property is everything. Its elevated position above St Ives Bay affords views that span from Smeaton’s Pier all the way to the iconic Godrevy Lighthouse. The interiors take their direction in many ways from the renowned St Ives’ sculptor and artist Barbara Hepworth. As her work took inspiration from nature, creating fluid abstract forms in stone, so this was reflected in the design elements at Pelagos. Working closely with MV Developments we were involved in this project from the outset. While the exterior has the feel of a contemporary villa with simple forms and symmetry, we created a more fluid interior installing curved walls and using micro-cement for the floors. Working with the client, a central spiral staircase was installed, inspired by Hepworth’s Pelagos sculpture.

Each room was designed to have its own personality and we took the lead in terms of colour palette from the ever-changing colours of the ocean; from the blues and neutrals of fair-weather days to the greys and dark teals that come with Cornish storms. Scandinavian influences were brought into the living area with furniture chosen for simplicity of form. To contrast with this, and to create micro-areas within what was a large open-plan living space, timber cladding was added up the wall and over the ceiling in the sitting room to create a backdrop for the vast BoConcept sofa. Timeless texture was added to the exterior walls with long thin white bricks, adding an urban element to this coastal eyrie. Organic forms in the shape of pendant lighting from Tom Dixon echoed the natural curves elsewhere in the home.

Pelagos is available to rent through Boutique Retreats.
